We are very excited to introduce the latest addition to our team of vascular surgery experts. Maksim V. Gusev, MD is a distinguished vascular surgeon working at the Premier Surgical Vascular & Vein Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dr. Gusev’s expertise and dedication to his field have earned him accolades and respect among his peers. In the following interview, Dr. Gusev explains what areas of vascular care he covers, his approach to patient care, and why he loves the field of vascular surgery.

Dr. Gusev, tell us what conditions you treat and what you most enjoy about vascular surgery.

I treat the full gamut of vascular pathology, anywhere from carotid disease, aneurysms, peripheral artery disease to the venous issues as well. I think every area in vascular surgery has its unique challenges. However, I do have a special interest in aortic disease and peripheral artery disease.

Tell us a bit about your education and medical background.

I’m originally from Eastern Europe, and Ukraine. Immigrated here when I was a teenager, specifically to Sacramento, California. That’s where I got my undergraduate education and medical school at UC Davis Medical School. And then I had my general surgery residency in Riverside That’s Southern California.  Then, I finished with a vascular fellowship in Loma Linda.

How would you describe your philosophy of patient care?

Patients deserve to have the best care in the world. Along the same lines, they need to have a custom approach. Every patient has a unique pathology. They have different sized arteries, and therefore, each therapy and each approach must be uniquely tailored to each patient.

We have the privilege or, I think, the unique insight in the patient’s continuum along every stage of vascular disease from somebody for whom peripheral disease is just beginning to experience the symptoms, and we can guide them along the way and perhaps change their lifestyle diet and put them on cholesterol lowering medications. And then, we can see them later down along the continuum of the disease and guide them through the optimal therapies.

What do you love about vascular surgery?

Vascular surgery is unique, and it requires a lot of planning and precision, each patient is a unique patient. They have arteries that measure in millimeters, and we have to make those measurements precise to put in a precisely fitted stent. It’s kind of like you’re custom tailoring a suit for somebody.

What should your patients know about you?

I think that there is a philosophy which is gaining the trend, so to speak, in terms of leaving your work at work and not bringing it home. For a surgeon like me, I bring my patients home. Your victories are my victories, your misfortunes or challenges are my challenges. I pour over them at home, and sometimes in the middle of the night, I rehearse the steps of a certain procedure that I’ll be doing the next day or maybe a week later. I just want you to know that I am obsessed with perfection, and your success is my success. I celebrate it.

Finally, tell us a bit about yourself. What do you enjoy when you aren’t working?

I have a big family. I have four children. We are a very outdoorsy family, and this is what drew us to the state of Tennessee in the first place. This place is perfect. It’s nestled in between the mountains and studded with lakes and rivers and surrounded by lush nature. We love kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, and this is just a great place to raise a family.
