Varithena for Large Swollen Veins

New Treatment for Large, Swollen Veins

Varicose veins can affect your life, physically and emotionally. These large, twisted, swollen veins cause painful symptoms such as aching, throbbing and itching or burning sensations in the legs. These symptoms can impact your self-esteem and your ability to do everyday activities.

Fortunately, varicose veins don’t have to take a toll on your life forever! There are several vein treatments offered at Premier Surgical Vascular & Vein Center in Knoxville, TN.

Love Your Legs Again with Varithena

Premier Surgical Vascular & Vein Center is excited to offer Varithena, a minimally invasive, gentle, and quick treatment for varicose veins.

Fellowship-trained, Board-Certified Vascular Surgeon with Premier Surgical, Dr. Stephen A. Tonks specializes in Endovascular Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Vascular Access, and Varicose Veins. He performs the Varithena procedure at the Premier Surgical Vascular & Vein Center located on Papermill Drive.

How is Varithena similar to sclerotherapy?

Dr. Tonks says, “Both sclerotherapy and Varithena involve an injection, but Varithena injects a micro-foam that suspends a chemical to treat the vein or close the vein. Unlike sclerotherapy which treats smaller varicose veins, Varithena can target deeper veins.”

Further, Dr. Tonks explains, “Similar to vein treatments like laser or Radiofrequency Ablation, Varithena is guided by ultrasound imaging. However, Varithena is much less invasive and requires a very small needle and fewer injections.”

What is the treatment process like?
“This treatment can be as short as five minutes and as long as maybe twenty minutes. It’s pretty quick compared to other vein treatments,” Dr. Tonks says.

“After the procedure, patients are encouraged to do their normal activities such as walking, and to avoid any heavy lifting,” Dr. Tonks explains.

Are there any risks or side effects of this treatment?
Dr. Tonks says, “With Varithena, there is a risk of potentially serious blood clots that may develop, which is a similar risk of other vein treatments. The most common side effects are leg discomfort, and some bruising around the injection site.”
