Varicose veins are a common condition, often affecting the legs and the feet. Although they are usually harmless, varicose veins can be painful and disfiguring.
What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins are often a result of weak/damaged valves. The tiny valves in the veins help in returning blood to the heart. They open as blood flows towards the heart and then closes to keep blood from flowing backward. If these valves are damaged or weakened, the blood can flow backward, pool in the vein, and cause the vein to stretch or bulge.
There are several factors that can increase your risk of varicose veins. These include a family history, age (the risk increases with age), pregnancy, obesity, and having a sedentary lifestyle.
