Spring is finally here! It’s time to put away the thick jackets, long pants, and bring out the skirts, shorts, and sleeveless tops. If you are concerned with the appearance of your varicose veins, know that treatment options are available.

Getting Rid of Varicose Veins

At Premier Vein Clinics in Knoxville we offer different ways of treating your varicose veins. Here are some of the treatment options we offer:

  • Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure in which a chemical substance called a sclerosant is injected into an affected vein. This substance irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing the formation of the clot that blocks blood flow in the vein beyond. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades. After sclerotherapy, the treated vein usually fades within a few weeks although it’s not uncommon to see full results after a month or more. Often, the procedure won’t just improve the appearance of the spider veins. It can also provide relief to associated symptoms like aching, burning, swelling, and night cramps.
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure that involves the removal of superficial veins through small, slit-like incisions on the skin. Patients can return to their usual activities after the procedure. However, they need to continue to wear graduated compression stockings for a week or so, as instructed by the surgeon.
  • Endovenous laser therapy
This procedure is becoming the gold standard in the treatment of varicose veins. It uses laser energy (a highly concentrated beam of light) on the diseased vein to close and seal it shut. The light energy is delivered through a thin tube, inserted through a very small entry point in the skin. This is a minimally invasive procedure and only requires a local anesthetic agent to numb the area the surgeon is working on. Varicose veins can be a nuisance. Not only are they a cosmetic issue, but they can also cause a great deal of discomfort.
