Past Vein Treatments
Not too long ago, many were resigned to living with discomfort from spider veins and varicose veins. As painful as they can be, patients had limited options for treatment. It wasn’t unusual for people to live with spider or varicose veins rather than undergo surgery or treatment.
Vein stripping was a popular method for managing varicose veins, but it was very painful and scarring could often result. Patients faced lengthy rehabilitation periods after vein stripping. Treatments were costly, invasive, and required extensive time off from work.
Advances in Vein Treatment
Thankfully, advances in technology are making vein treatments easier than ever before. They’re non-invasive, affordable, and can often be accessed as part of medical insurance. New treatments include: Ambulatory Phlebectomy, Endovenous Laser Therapy and Radiofrequency Ablation Endovenous Therapy.
Which Treatment Is Right For You?
The right treatment for you will depend on if you are seeking to treat varicose veins or spider veins, the results you wish to see, and how extensive the problem is.
Sclerotherapy is an effective, minimally invasive treatment option for spider veins. It is relatively painless and can be performed in under an hour. No pain medication or surgery is required. The number of Sclerotherapy treatments needed varies with the severity of the problem. There are very few side effects and patients can usually resume regular activities immediately following treatment.
Sometimes used in conjunction with Sclerotherapy, Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a common treatment for varicose veins. Local anaesthetic is used during this in-office, minimally invasive procedure. Little to no down time is required after treatment.
Endovenous Laser Therapy may be suggested for patients with large varicose veins. This alternative requires a local anaesthetic, but there is no hospital stay needed. Additional to these, Radiofrequency Ablation Endovenous Therapy uses radiofrequency energy to shrink veins. No anaesthetic is required and the treatment is covered by most health insurance plans.
