The flow of blood travels from the heart through arteries to the leg then returns to the heart through veins. Veins have one-way valves that help keep the blood flowing in the right direction and against gravity, to prevent any back flow. When a valve becomes weak and begins to leak, pooling may occur causing an enlarged, or varicose vein.
Endovenous Ablation is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. During the procedure abnormally enlarged veins within the legs are closed off utilizing radiofrequency or laser energy. Upon closure of the vein with the leaky valve, blood is naturally rerouted to healthy veins therefore the overall flow of blood within the body is not disrupted.
Endovenous ablation is done as an outpatient procedure _ at Premier Vein Clinics in Knoxville. Prior to the procedure a topical anesthetic is applied to the leg being treated. Additional local anesthetic may be injected around the abnormal vein. Once the area is numb, a small incision is made and a catheter inserted into the varicose vein. Used in conjunction with ultrasound technology, the physician will have a real-time digital image to guide the catheter and study the severity of the condition of the vein. Additional local anesthetic is injected through the catheter around the abnormal vein to ease any discomfort during the procedure. A laser fiber or radiofrequency electrode is then injected through the catheter to the problem site. By retracting the catheter ever so slightly the tip of the fiber or electrode is exposed allowing for the delivery of radiofrequency or laser energy. Intense, localized heat is administered to the abnormal vein as the catheter is slowly withdrawn to close off the varicose vein.
Again, the entire procedure is guided by ultrasound technology and is usually completed within an hour. Patients are able to walk shortly after the procedure is complete. Many patients report only minimal discomfort during the initial injection of local anesthetic around the abnormal vein. Following the procedure patients receive specific instructions for caring for your legs to ensure optimal recovery. Generally this will include limited physical activity and gradually working back up to normal routine while incorporating plenty of time to elevate the treated leg and secure veins with compression garments.
The overall goal of endovenous ablation is to reduce symptoms and minimize the risk of complications from venous disease.
