4 Rules for Quick Sclerotherapy RecoverySclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure performed in office to treat small and large spider veins. During the procedure abnormal veins are injected with a solution causing them to swell, collapse and fade away over time. Once the vein collapses and closes down, it is absorbed naturally back into the body.

Sclerotherapy is a safe procedure and patients are usually able to return to normal activity with limited restrictions the same day. The treatment is relatively painless and normally performed within an hour. There are a couple of tips worth noting to ensure your proper recovery and maintenance of long term results. Here are the top 4:

  1. Wear Compression Stockings: It is recommended patients wear compression stockings for one to three weeks post- treatment. Your provider will talk with you specifically about the degree of compression needed and the length of use. Long-term use of compression stockings can help reduce your risk for recurrence or future onset of vein issues.
  1. Avoid the Sun: Overexposure to sun can cause the skin to show signs of aging and also lead to spider veins. To allow your veins proper healing, avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks and always wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
  1. Take it Easy: Sclerotherapy generally does not require any down time and patients are usually allowed to walk immediately after treatment. You should, however, plan to take it easy for a few days and avoid any strenuous exercise for at least 3 days post-treatment.
  1. Follow Up with your Provider: A two week follow- up appointment will be scheduled to ensure proper healing and determine that no additional treatments are needed. Schedule and keep this appointment to achieve – optimal results from your sclerotherapy treatment.

Sclerotherapy has proven to be quite effective in eliminating most visible spider veins. While this procedure is not covered by most insurance plans, it is a reasonably affordable treatment option for many people. The number of treatments required is dependent upon the severity of the condition. A complimentary sclerotherapy treatment is often offered to patients of Premier Vein Clinics following a treatment for varicose veins.
