No matter the treatment – Sclerotherapy, Ambulatory Phlebectomy, Endovenous Laser Therapy, or Radiofrequency Ablation Endovenous Therapy – procedures are completed at Premier Vein Clinics in Knoxville in around an hour. Following a procedure, if necessary, bandages are applied and/or a compression garment. Compression garments are generally recommended to be worn the first night following a procedure, after which they should be worn during the day for the doctor’s recommended length of time. Soon after the procedure is completed, patients are encouraged to walk around the office before heading home. Patients can return to limited regular activities on the same day as the procedure; however, it is preferred to take at minimum, a day of rest.
Following any vein procedure, patients are encouraged to maintain gentle daily activity including short frequent walks throughout the day. A common rule of thumb is three 20 minutes walks a day. This is in addition to getting up every hour to simply stretch the legs and wearing the recommended compression garment. Strenuous exercising such as jogging, weight lifting or cycling is discouraged for a minimum of two weeks following the procedure.
Most patients experience little to no discomfort following a procedure. Following the procedure they are placed on a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like Aleve, which can be purchased over the counter. Patients who have undergone treatment for larger veins may experience more pain and discomfort.
Patients usually are asked to return around two weeks following the procedure to confirm results and determine whether further treatment is necessary. In summary, patients are able to walk on the same day of treatment and recover in a relatively short amount of time.
